Rider Safety Agreement

LogoRider Safety Agreement

The Triple Bypass Bicycle Tour is conducted on open roads with vehicular traffic.  Roads include both marked and unmarked hazards.  Though we go to great lengths to make the ride as safe as possible, always remember that safety is in your own hands and ride by these rules:

  1. Wear a helmet at all times – NO EXCEPTIONS
  2. Carry ID and relevant medical information
  3. Rules of the road apply; same rights and duties as the driver of any other vehicle
  4. Ride single file where necessary, maximum of two abreast when conditions allow, do not impede traffic
  5. Ride as far right as reasonable
  6. Obey all traffic lights, signs, and regulations
  7. Pass on the left only, announce “passing” or “hello” or “on your left”
  8. Use hand signals to indicate road hazards, stopping, slowing, right, and left turns
  9. Prepare properly – nutrition, hydration, training, and sudden changes in weather conditions
  10. Respect others: riders, volunteers, host communities, motorists, pedestrians, law enforcement, and the environment

Riding safely and considerately is vital to your enjoyment and the safety of other riders.  The future of cycling events in Colorado depends on your cooperation with the rules above.

Double Triple Bypass Riders - Safety &  Cut-off Times

Loveland – 2:00 p.m. Georgetown – 4:00 p.m. Squaw – 7:00 p.m. Evergreen - 8:00 p.m.

EMT and Paramedics will be positioned at each Aid Station along the route. Double riders will need to check-in at each aid station on Sunday, July 10, 2011 with Triple Bypass Staff.

There are several things to consider when deciding if it is safe to ride the second day.  You are the best resource to know if you can continue to ride since you know your body better than we do.  The following are some guidelines we have provided to help guide you.

Hydration:

You should not continue to ride if you have not had enough to drink yesterday and today.

If your urine is dark and very concentrated, you should not continue to ride.

Avoid alcohol, drink plenty of fluids and maintain electrolyte levels.

Cramps:

If you are having problems with cramping muscles, you should not continue to ride.

If you had problems with cramping muscles on Saturday, you should not ride on Sunday.

 AMS or Acute Mountain Sickness:

Watch for signs of AMS such as:  difficulty sleeping, shortness of breath, fatigue, headache, weakness, nausea, or dizziness.  If you have symptoms of AMS, you should not continue to ride.  If you are vomiting or have a headache that does not respond to over the counter headache medications, you should descend to a lower altitude or seek medical treatment.  If you are having difficulty walking or riding due to a loss of coordination, seek medical treatment immediately.

Altered Mental Status:

Changes in mental status or ability can be caused by many conditions experienced on your ride.  If you experience any changes seek medical attention immediately.  Unfortunately it is difficult for someone to assess their own mental status when they are having problems, and they may not recognize these changes.  Often riders with a decrease in mental status continue to ride and do not seek medical attention.  It is therefore important to be aware of the riders around you, and look out for each others safety.  Altered mental status can be caused by a variety of life-threatening conditions, examples include:  electrolyte imbalances, altitude illnesses, low oxygen levels, low blood sugar levels, head injuries, hypothermia, heat stroke, and more.
